As part of the ongoing monitoring of glacier environment changes in the Rockies, Chris and students Tristan Goulden (PhD ABD, Dalhousie) and Reed Parsons (honours student, Lethbridge) visited the field camp at Peyto Glacier in July 2013 with Martin Isenburg (rapidlasso) and Mark Ednie (NRCan) to conduct GPS surveys in parallel with lidar and thermal image acquisitions over the glacial and periglacial environments. This was the latest in a long standing close collaboration with the Canadian glacier observation program led by the Geological Survey of Canada going back to 1995.

Chris is building up his lidar geosciences research lab in the Alberta Terrestrial Imaging Centre and Dept of Geography. He is seeking Masters and Ph.D. students to assist in building this lab capacity and to work on a range of geosciences application development research projects. In particular, he is looking for students that are interested in or have experience with airborne, satellite or terrestrial lidar data processing workflows, sensor / instrument integration and programming, and geospatial analysis scripting or programming in open source or standard RS and GIS packages.

Jamie's M.Sc. Defense - Congratulations

Jamie Goettel successfully defended his M.Sc. thesis on June 11, 2013. His thesis is entitled "Structure and Chemistry of Sulfur Tetrafluoride". He will leave the Gerken lab by the end of the summer. Jamie will stay in fluorine chemistry, pursuing a Ph.D. with Gary J. Schrobilgen at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

C-CRAFT

The Canadian Centre for Research in Advanced Fluorine Technologies (C-CRAFT) was approved by the University of Lethbridge General Faculties Council.  The establishment of this centre formally recognizes the high concentration of expertise in fluorine chemistry at the U of L.
